Process

Timeframe: 8 weeks

Role: Publication designer, Brand identity designer

Software: Adobe Indesign, Adobe Photoshop

The Challenge

My fictitious client is Ventura Projects, an international design organization that highlights existing and new designers with a strong focus on creativity and innovation. They are producing a magazine as an extension of their brand to showcase these designers and others they are inspired by.

The Solution

Three editions of Process; A Magazine for Designers, The Artificial Intelligence Issue, The Analogue Issue, and the Eco-Concious Issue.

The Analogue Issue is a 64-page publication with 14 feature spreads, some of which can be seen below.

To kickstart the design process, I conducted thorough research into both the content and visual aspects of the magazine. This initial step was crucial in shaping the magazine's identity and setting the tone for its overall direction.

After deciding to focus this edition of the magazine on designers currently using tactile methods, I set out to find those people. I chose eleven designers and artists to highlight in this edition, some well-known and some with only 1000 followers on Instagram.

My next step was deciding how the visual tone would be created through type. These type studies coincided with the beginnings of layout studies where I took inspiration from Avant Garde’s off-balance approach as well as the tactile nature of the artists highlighted. I wanted the imagery of each designer to be on display dynamically and playfully through each page turn.

While working on finding good-quality images of each person's art and designs, I created a prototype that would serve as my guidebook when designing each spread. This way of organizing and planning was extremely helpful throughout the rest of the process and I would have truly been lost without it.

Creating the first draft of the magazine was daunting, putting each element together; format, type, layout, image, organization. After receiving feedback on some technical typesetting errors and layout issues, I continued with the second draft.

The end result is a magazine publication that highlights innovative designers using tactile methods. I learned how important organization is in publication design from start to finish, as well as how difficult it can be to honor the content by not over-designing.
